    "The Martha Howard Quilt"

This antique treasure is the oldest known American made whole-cloth quilt.  It was donated to the Canton, MA Historical Society around 1910 and over time, forgotten.  A historical society employee discovered the box in storage at the Society headquarters in 2008, as well as letters documenting the quilt's history.  The quilt subsequently underwent a year-long restoration project to return it to its former glory.

Come hear the story of Martha Howard’s journey and her dedication to perfection in creating this magnificent quilt. Witness the unique salmon color of the ‘chintz like’ wool. Admire the handiwork, and marvel at the overall quilting patterns, designs typical of New England.

This is the first time the quilt has been released for a multi-day display open to the general public!
